Define risk culture. Outline effective strategies to reinforce and enhance i risk culture
Definition of Risk Culture
Risk culture refers to the shared norms and values around risk identification, assessment, and management within an organization.
It represents every employee, from the CEO to the newest teller, who truly understands and takes responsibility for risk in their daily work.
A sound and consistent risk culture in a bank is a key element of effective risk management. Mere having risk policies is not enough. The bank must apply those policies to every task.
Effective Strategies to reinforce and enhance risk culture
The following strategies should be implemented to reinforce and enhance risk culture in a financial institution:
(1) The Board and senior management should set a good example of ethical and responsible behaviour.
(2) Employees should feel free to report risks or problems without fear of unfair blame.
(3) The institution should clearly communicate the level of risk it is willing to accept.
(4) Employee bonuses and targets should encourage responsible risk-taking. Policy violations should have clear consequences.
(5) The institution should regularly assess its risk culture, identify weaknesses, and take corrective action.
(6) Employees should receive regular training about risks and their responsibilities for managing them. 99th BPE Q1(c)
