Distinguish between withholding information and distorting information. How can ethical considerations influence the communication process in business?

Withholding Information vs. Distorting Information

Withholding Information

Withholding information means deliberately leaving out important facts. These facts are needed by the receiver to make the right judgment or decision. The communication may seem complete. However, key information is intentionally omitted.

Example: A social media advertisement looks like a normal post. It does not mention that it is a paid advertisement. This is an example of withholding information.

Distorting Information

Distorting information means misleadingly presenting true facts. The information is not completely false. However, it is changed or manipulated to create a wrong impression.

Information can be distorted in different ways.

  • Words: Misquoting a statement to change its original meaning.
  • Statistics: Presenting charts or tables that exaggerate or reduce the actual situation.
  • Images: Editing photographs or infographics to misrepresent reality.

Example: A bank manager prepares optimistic sales charts. He ignores the declining market share. As a result, the board makes poor investment decisions.

Key Difference

Withholding information means leaving out important facts. Distorting information means misleadingly presenting existing facts. Both are unethical. Both deceive the receiver and reduce trust.

How Ethical Considerations Influence the Communication Process in Business

Honesty as the Foundation

Ethical communication is based on honesty. It requires sharing all relevant information. This includes both positive and negative facts. It helps people make informed decisions.

Building Trust

Ethical communication builds trust. It creates strong relationships between the sender and the receiver. Trust is essential for long-term business success.

Legal Compliance

Ethical communication is also a legal requirement in banking. Misleading investors is unethical. Falsifying reports is also unethical. Withholding important information from regulators can lead to serious legal consequences.

Better Decision-Making

Ethical communication provides accurate and complete information. It helps managers make better decisions. It also reduces organizational risk.

Positive Organizational Culture

Ethical communication promotes transparency and accountability. Employees feel comfortable sharing honest opinions. This creates a stronger and more trustworthy organization.

Conclusion

Withholding information and distorting information are both unethical. They mislead others and damage trust. Ethical communication is based on honesty, completeness, and transparency. It is both a professional and legal responsibility, especially in financial institutions.
