What are the steps in crafting an effective CV? Describe the main items on a CV

A CV is one of the most important documents in the job application process. It represents a candidate’s profile and is used for interviews, applications, and career opportunities. A strong CV increases the chance of getting shortlisted.

Part A: Steps in Crafting an Effective CV

Step 1: Planning

The first step is planning the CV. The goal is to secure an interview, not the job itself. The candidate should study the target industry and employer.

In banking, recruiters expect clarity, professionalism, and relevant skills. Information should be arranged in a way that highlights strengths.

Step 2: Writing

Each section should be written from the employer’s point of view. The language must be simple, professional, and active.

Avoid unnecessary words and jargon. Focus on achievements and contributions, not just duties.

Step 3: Formatting (Finishing)

The CV should have a clean and simple layout. Banking CVs should be formal and text-based. Avoid excessive colors, graphics, or design elements. The goal is clarity and professionalism.

Step 4: Reviewing

The CV must be carefully checked before submission. Spelling, grammar, and formatting errors should be removed.

The final CV should be submitted according to the employer’s instructions, such as a PDF or an online application.

Part B: Main Items on a CV

Personal Information

Includes full name, address, phone number, email, and LinkedIn profile if available. All information must be accurate and updated.

Career Objective or Profile Summary

A short introduction showing career goals or professional strengths. Fresh graduates may use a career objective, while experienced candidates use a summary of qualifications.

Educational Background

Includes degrees, institutions, passing years, subjects, results, and any academic achievements or relevant coursework.

Work Experience and Skills

List job experience in reverse order. Focus on achievements and results. Include internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer work.

Also highlight relevant skills such as communication, analysis, and technical abilities.

Extracurricular Activities and Achievements

Includes leadership roles, club activities, sports, debates, or volunteer work. These show teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.

References

Names and contact details of 2–3 referees who can verify your skills and character. Always take permission before listing them.

Conclusion

A well-structured CV must be clear, professional, and tailored to the job. Planning, writing, formatting, and reviewing ensure a strong and effective CV that improves the chance of selection.
