What are the difference between Investment Banking and Commercial Banking

Investment banking and commercial banking are two major types of banking. Although both are important to the financial system, they differ in their functions, customers, risk, and regulatory framework.

Main Activities:

Commercial banks accept deposits from the public, provide loans to individuals and businesses, and offer services such as payment processing and bill collection.

In contrast, investment banks do not accept public deposits. Their main activities include underwriting securities, raising capital, facilitating mergers and acquisitions, trading financial instruments, and providing financial advisory services.

Risk Profile:

Commercial banks generally have more stable earnings because they mainly earn income from interest on loans. Their major risks are loan defaults and changes in interest rates.

Investment banks face higher market risk because their earnings depend on trading activities and corporate deals, which can fluctuate significantly.

Regulation:

Commercial banks are strictly regulated to protect depositors and maintain financial stability. They are required to maintain reserve ratios and adequate capital.

Investment banks are regulated mainly under securities laws to ensure fair and transparent capital market operations.

Customers:

Commercial banks mainly serve individuals, small businesses, and corporate customers by providing everyday banking services.

On the other hand, investment banks primarily serve governments, large corporations, institutional investors, and other large organizations.

In summary, commercial banks focus on deposit-taking and lending activities, while investment banks specialize in capital raising, corporate finance, and investment-related services.
