Briefly discuss the steps in effective listening

Listening is an important communication skill that goes beyond simply hearing words. It involves understanding, interpreting, and responding appropriately to the message.

Effective listening requires focus, patience, and active participation.

The main steps are given below.

Maintain proper eye contact:

Look at the speaker while listening. It shows respect and interest in the conversation.

Be attentive:

Avoid all distractions such as mobile phones or other activities. Give full attention to the speaker.

Keep an open mind:

Do not judge the speaker or the message before it is fully delivered. Focus on understanding first.

Visualize the message:

Create a mental picture of what the speaker is saying. This helps in better understanding and memory.

Do not interrupt:

Allow the speaker to complete their thoughts. Interrupting breaks communication flow.

Wait for a pause:

Respond or ask questions when the speaker pauses naturally, not during speaking.

Ask clarification questions:

If something is unclear, ask polite and relevant questions to ensure correct understanding.

Empathize with the speaker:

Try to understand the speaker’s point of view and feelings.

Provide constructive feedback:

After the speaker finishes, give clear and useful responses or feedback when needed.

Pay attention to non-verbal cues:

Observe body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions to understand the full meaning.

Conclusion:

Effective listening improves communication quality and reduces misunderstandings.

In banking and business environments, it helps professionals understand clients better and make accurate decisions.
