Discuss the Functions of Investment Banking

Investment banking performs several important functions in the financial system.

It helps businesses raise capital, supports investment activities, and provides expert financial advice.

Have a look at the functions of Investment Banking:

Primary Market Making:

One of the main functions of an investment bank is to help companies and governments raise funds.

It underwrites new issues of shares and bonds, completes the registration process, and distributes the securities to investors.

It also assists companies in bringing IPOs to the market.

Secondary Market Making:

Investment banks also operate in the secondary market.

They buy and sell securities as brokers or dealers and help investors complete transactions.

Their activities improve market liquidity and make trading more efficient.

Trading and Speculation:

Another important function of investment banks is trading financial securities. Banks may trade for their own accounts to earn profits.

They also use arbitrage opportunities and invest based on expected price movements.

Corporate Restructuring:

Many companies seek the support of investment banks during major business changes.

They provide advice on mergers, acquisitions, takeovers, divestitures, and business expansion.

They also help manage changes in ownership and corporate control.

Financial Engineering:

Investment banks design innovative financial products to meet the needs of clients.

They structure complex financial deals and develop instruments that help reduce or manage financial risks.

Advisory Services:

Professional financial advice is another key service of investment banks.

Investment banks guide clients on investment decisions, manage investment portfolios, undertake merchant banking activities, and support venture capital investments.

Support Activities:

Besides these functions, investment banks conduct market research, publish research reports, provide market information, and ensure the smooth clearing and settlement of securities transactions.

In summary, investment banks perform a wide range of functions that support capital raising, investment activities, corporate growth, and the efficient operation of the financial market.
