What is E-KYC? How can it be used for mitigating credit risk?

What is E-KYC?

E-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) is the digital process of verifying a customer’s identity using electronic means such as biometric verification, national ID card databases (NID), and digital forms — instead of physical paper-based documentation.

Bangladesh Bank and BFIU have issued guidelines on e-KYC as a modern alternative to the traditional KYC process.

E-KYC differs from traditional KYC in the following ways:

  • Traditional KYC requires physical presence and hard copies of documents. E-KYC is done digitally — the customer does not need to be physically present.
  • Traditional KYC is paper-intensive and slow. E-KYC uses digital forms, biometrics, and automated verification — making it faster and more accurate.
  • E-KYC reduces document forgery risk — information is verified directly against government databases (NID server).
  • E-KYC enables financial inclusion — customers in remote areas can open accounts without visiting a branch.

How E-KYC Mitigates Credit Risk

E-KYC reduces credit risk by ensuring that the identity of the borrower is accurately verified before any credit decision is made. Its benefits include:

  • Prevents identity fraud — a major cause of credit losses in unsecured lending. Borrowers cannot impersonate others or use forged documents to obtain credit.
  • Provides access to verified financial and demographic data — enabling better assessment of the borrower’s repayment capacity.
  • Enables linking to Credit Information Bureau (CIB) records — allowing lenders to verify the borrower’s existing debt obligations and credit history.
  • Supports ongoing monitoring — e-KYC profiles can be updated electronically, ensuring the bank always has current information on its borrowers.
  • Reduces documentation exceptions — a major indicator of poor credit risk management — by ensuring complete and verified documentation at the point of onboarding.
