Define Risk and Return. Explain the Relationship Between Risk and Return

Risk and return are two fundamental concepts in investment. Every investment involves some level of risk, and investors expect a return as a reward for taking that risk.

Risk: Risk is the possibility that an investment may not produce the expected return. It also refers to the chance of losing part or all of the invested money due to uncertainty.

Return: Return is the financial gain or income earned from an investment over a certain period. It shows the benefit an investor receives from investing money.

Relationship Between Risk and Return

Risk and return have a positive relationship. In general, the higher the risk, the higher the expected return.

Similarly, investments with lower risk usually provide lower returns.

This relationship exists because investors expect higher returns as compensation for taking greater risk.

For example, government securities are considered low-risk investments, so they usually offer lower returns.

On the other hand, shares and corporate bonds involve higher risk and therefore have the potential to provide higher returns.

However, higher expected return does not guarantee higher actual return. Investors should choose investments according to their risk tolerance, financial goals, and investment horizon.

In summary, risk and return are closely related. A higher level of risk offers the possibility of higher returns, while lower-risk investments generally provide lower but more stable returns.
