Write about three pillars of Asset Liability Management (ALM). Describe the importance of ALM of a bank.

Three Pillars of Asset-Liability Management

(1) Balance Sheet Management and Profitability: The bank manages its assets and liabilities carefully. It maintains a proper balance between loans, investments, deposits, and other liabilities. This helps the bank increase its income and profitability.

(2) Market Risk Management: The bank identifies and controls risks caused by changes in interest rates and exchange rates. It uses tools such as gap analysis and duration analysis to measure these risks.

(3) Contingency Planning and Liquidity Assurance: The bank keeps enough liquid funds to meet its payment obligations. It also prepares a contingency funding plan to deal with unexpected situations and liquidity problems.

Importance of ALM:

(1) Profit Optimization: ALM helps the bank manage its assets and liabilities in a way that increases interest income and overall profit.

(2) Risk Protection: ALM helps the bank identify and control interest rate and exchange rate risks. This reduces the possible loss to the bank.

(3) Liquidity Safety: ALM ensures that the bank has enough cash and liquid assets to meet its obligations on time, even during financial difficulties.

(4) Better Strategic Decisions: ALM provides management with useful information about risks, liquidity, assets, and liabilities. This helps management make better decisions.

(5) Regulatory Compliance: ALM helps the bank follow the requirements of Bangladesh Bank and international banking standards such as Basel III.
